Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago of 61,000 sqkm in the North of Europe, around the 80th parallel. It is often called Spitsbergen although this is only the name of the main island where the capital city Longyearbyen is located. The history of Svalbard dates back to the 17th century, when it was a whaling base, and to the beginning of the 20th century when coal mining started.
Nowadays such activities have disappeared or are anecdotal and Svalbard is a heaven for arctic birds, polar bears, foxes and other mammals.
Seven national parks and twenty three nature reserves guaranty the conservation of this pristine archipelago whose 60% of the land surface is covered by glaciers.
