Landlocked between Uganda, DR Congo, Burundi and Tanzania, Rwanda is a small country of 26,400 sqkm which is often called « the Switzerland of Africa » due to the its numerous hills and the chain of volcanoes in the North-West region. This country has also an extremely rich history as modern human settlements, in what is now Rwanda, date from the last glacial period, either in the Neolithic period around 8000 BC, or in the long humid period which followed, up to around 3000 BC. More recently the country has undergone a huge effort of national reunification allowing visitors to fully appreciate the friendliness of its population and the cleanness of its environment.
Rwanda is famous for its mountain gorillas and it offers probably the best conditions to trek and observe these magnificent primates, as the forest in which they live is less dense and easier to access than in the neighbouring countries. Other species, such as the endangered golden monkeys, plus beautiful locations, such as Lake Kivu, naturally complement active adventures in this extraordinary country.
