Landlocked between South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Mozambique, Zimbabwe is a country of 390,000 sqkm with 13 million habitants and extremely contrasted environments. Its history can be traced back to the 9th century when Shona speaking societies settled in the highlands and developed agriculture and trade. This explains why up until more recently, the country, named Rhodesia, had the reputation of being the wheat warehouse of southern Africa.
Nature has also blessed Zimbabwe with some unique features such as some of the finest wildlife reserves of Africa: Hwange, Matusadona and Mana Pools national parks. While Hwange is in a dry environment, which draws elephants and other wildlife close to waterholes, Matusadona and Mana Pools are located near the northern border, along the mighty Zambezi River.
The abundance of water in these reserves, and the difficulty of access limiting the number of visitors and cars, offer a beautiful and serene backdrop where wildlife can be approached on walking safaris. Wild dogs are also often seen in these parks. This landscape is in stark contrast to the world famous Victoria Falls and their crashing deluge of water.
A successful safari in Zimbabwe will combine several of these varied environments to offer a unique and unforgettable experience.
