Kakamega Forest National Park

Kakamega Forest is a tropical forest situated in the North West of Kenya, near the border with Uganda. The forest of 238 spkm, situated between 1,500 and 1,600 metres above sea level encloses Kakamega National Reserve and has some of the greatest biodiversity of Africa.

The flora counts over 380 recorded species of plants including 150 species of trees, and170 species of flowering plants including 60 species of orchids, etc.

The forest is especially famous for its birds as 367 bird species have been recorded in the forest, such as west African Great blue turaco, black-and-white-casqued hornbill, and at least 9 birds are not found anywhere else.

Wildlife that occur in the park include bush pig, duikers, bushbuck, African clawless otter, mongoose, giant African water shrew, squirrels, tree pangolin, porcupine, bats and a variety of primates including the blue monkey, redtail monkey, De Brazza’s monkey, baboon, potto and the occasional vervet monkey.

Far off the usual touristic tracks, Kakamega Forest National Park provides a unique experience for bird enthusiasts.
